Red Stone Indian stone carving from Sultanate and Mughal India

A publication to accompany the exhibition of Indian stone carving from Sultanate and Mughal India held in collaboration with Francesca Galloway, 31 Dover Street, London, W1S 4ND.

This catalogue brings together examples of Indian stone carving from two different periods of history, emphasising the importance and variation of stonework in Indian architecture. Mughal jalis (stone screens) from the 16th to 18th century are presented alongside late-12th- and early-13th century fragments of Sultanate friezes, all carved in the distinctive red sandstone of Northern India. There are illustrations of all 28 pieces with accompanying text and an introduction by George Michell and Will Kwiatkowski highlighting the historical importance and beauty of the Mughal jalis and Sultanate friezes.
