Section of the Erlenmeyer-Bausback 'Small Pattern Holbein' carpet

c. 1475-1525
Western Anatolia
198 x 68 cm; A ‘Holbein’ carpet section; vertical section of ten and two half squares, wool pile on wool foundation, symmetrically knotted pile.
So-called ‘Holbein’ carpets like this Anatolian fragment take their name from the paintings of Hans Holbein the Younger (1497–1543), who famously depicted an example of this carpet type. Among these is Holbein’s famous portrait of Georg Gisze in the collection of the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, which shows a small rug with the same fielded pattern as the one presented here.
